The Spanish Army’s Barcelona Infantry Regiment No. 63 (RI-63) has bid farewell to two of its members selected for the upcoming campaign at the Gabriel de Castilla Antarctic Base (AGBS).
Deployment to the remote station is highly competitive and marks significant professional advancement for the selected personnel, according to the Spanish Army. The two members will join Spain’s Antarctic campaign, which operates during the brief austral summer.
The base, located on Deception Island in the South Shetland Islands, is Spain’s primary Antarctic facility. While research is its central focus, operations in the extreme polar environment rely on military logistical support. The deployed personnel will provide the operational backbone needed to keep the station running safely and efficiently, enabling researchers to conduct climate studies, geological surveys and environmental monitoring.
The deployment underscores the Spanish Army’s role in the nation’s polar strategy. By sending trained personnel to support the Gabriel de Castilla Base, Spain reinforces its active presence within the Antarctic Treaty System and its commitment to scientific exploration on the continent.
