Antarctic Science Ltd has launched a recruitment drive for up to two new board members, aiming to bolster its capacity to evaluate innovative research proposals and uphold scientific standards amid rapid technological change, according to an announcement by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR).
The UK-registered charitable company owns the journal Antarctic Science, published by Cambridge University Press, and uses its proceeds to fund early-career researchers through the Antarctic Science International Bursary scheme.
Since 2005, the organisation has awarded annual bursaries to early-career scientists, currently offering grants of up to £6,000 each to support Antarctic field and laboratory work—addressing a critical funding gap for those at the outset of their professional careers.
The charity is particularly seeking candidates with specialised expertise in glaciological modelling, data science, and machine learning, though it emphasises that applications from researchers in other Antarctic-related disciplines are also welcome.
Board members carry significant operational responsibilities, including managing the company’s finances, liaising with Cambridge University Press, and reviewing bursary applications.
The board convenes twice a year for main meetings, held either in person in Cambridge or online, with an additional virtual meeting dedicated to approving financial accounts. The positions are unpaid, but reasonable travel expenses within the UK and subsistence costs are fully covered.
Interested candidates must submit a two-page CV and a brief expression of interest by September 11, 2026.
