Ahead of their deployment to one of the world’s most unforgiving environments, the crew of Uruguay’s upcoming ANTARKOS XLIII campaign has completed rigorous fire prevention and response training, the Uruguayan Antarctic Institute (IAU) announced.
The specialised programme is designed to equip expedition personnel with critical emergency management skills tailored to the realities of the White Continent. In Antarctica’s extreme cold, dry air and isolated enclosed facilities, fire remains one of the most serious threats to scientific outposts.
The training was specifically adapted to polar conditions and covered:
– Advanced fire prevention techniques for enclosed research stations.
– Handling of firefighting equipment in sub-zero temperatures.
– Evacuation procedures.
– Emergency communication protocols for extreme isolation.
The ANTARKOS XLIII mission marks Uruguay’s 43rd Antarctic campaign. The crew will be stationed at the General Artigas Scientific Antarctic Base (BCAA) on King George Island. Because the base operates year-round in a remote setting with very limited external support, self-reliance and comprehensive emergency preparedness are essential for survival.
According to the IAU, the training protocols reflect international best practices and comply with the safety standards established under the Antarctic Treaty System. Uruguay has been a party to the Antarctic Treaty since 1980 and a Consultative Party since 1985, maintaining a long-standing commitment to environmental protection and scientific research.
With the safety milestone completed, the ANTARKOS XLIII crew is now prepared to respond to potential emergencies, ensuring a safer and more productive research season at Artigas Base.
